COMPUTATIONAL FLUENCY

Computational Fluency

As a school, we completed a school-wide computational fluency assessment in September to find out where are students were at in terms of their proficiency level with grade-appropriate computational fluency. Based on our data collection, 14% of our students were emerging.

We made it a school goal to improve in this area and wanted to decrease this number. We made an effort to take some time at each of our staff meetings to discuss in grade groups to plan for learning activities to build computational fluency skills and confidence. Teachers had our learning consultant, Janice Novakowski, come in and work with them (and their class) to support the development of computational fluency with their students. We also planned for time during our professional development days to work with Janice in grade groups looking at the pillars of numeracy to support the computational fluency skills.

In June we repeated this assessment to track the progress we had made as a school. Based on our data collection only 7% of our students were emerging in their computational fluency proficiency. We will continue this intentional practice next year, and continue doing these assessments as they give teachers good information to build next steps into their teaching practice.
