Emotional Language Growth
Our Everyday Speech pilot continued in the new year of 2024, with a focus on improving emotion vocabulary, self-regulation, and interpersonal skills. Students showed growth in their emotional literacy, and staff enjoyed participating in a book club (Permission to Feel by Marc Brackett). Discussion focused on the “RULER” acronym of emotion skills – Recognizing, Understanding, Labelling, Expressing, and Regulating emotions.
We collected data and compared pre/post assessment data to show growth (see pie charts).
Our next steps are to build the connection between this understanding of emotion skills and our school matrix language – “taking care of others, taking care of self, and taking care of place.” We will continue to grow and practice our consistent language in our school community in the context of social emotional learning.
