Remembrance Day Assembly
This week at Byng, we are observing and recognizing the significance of Remembrance Day and the important contributions of Canadian Veterans to the peace of our country today. There are several things happening around the school.
Poppy Coin Drive – Students will be coming around to classrooms each morning on Monday, November 6th – Friday, November 10th to collect coin donations for the Poppy Fund. Each student will be given a poppy to wear to the assembly on Friday, November 10th. If you can send your child with a small contribution, that would be much appreciated.
Photo Display of Byng Veterans – In our front foyer, the display case is housing photos of family and community members who have served their country. If you have a photo that you would like to display for our school community, please bring it to the school office. Please ensure it is labeled on the back so we can return it to you.
Remembrance Day Assembly – On Friday, November 10th at 10:45am, we will have our Remembrance Day assembly in the school gym. This assembly is more formal than our other assemblies. There will be a few musical performances by classes and our choir, however there will be no applause during the assembly. This assembly is meant to be a time of reflection and gratitude for the peace that we have in Canada. Each class is making a wreath of peace symbols to display and we will have some student volunteers lay a wreath at the podium. We will also include a playing of “The Last Post” and a moment of silence in our program. Family and community members are welcome to join us for this assembly.
In addition to these activities, many classes may be reading stories or poems, watching video clips and/or having discussions about the significance of Remembrance Day. Please feel free to ask your children about their thinking and learning. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your classroom teacher or myself.
